What Is Series Connection & Parallel Connection

Series connection: Connect batteries end-to-end to lift total voltage, capacity stays unchanged. Parallel connection: Connect positive to positive and negative to negative, total capacity increases, nominal voltage remains the same.
For AGM lead-acid batteries, series-parallel assembly has been widely used for decades. However LiFePO4 packs with smart BMS have stricter requirements for battery bank wiring. Improper wiring will cause imbalance, protection trigger and even safety risks.

Typical Application Scenarios For Series & Parallel

· Parallel: Expand capacity. For example, multiple 12.8V 200Ah packs in parallel to get larger 12.8V battery bank, widely used for 12V off-grid solar systems.
· Series: Boost system voltage. Two 12.8V packs in series to get 25.6V battery bank, match 24-volt inverters.
Note: Most finished LiFePO4 packs from factory are designed for parallel expansion. Field manual series connection is NOT recommended for most end-user projects.

Critical Rules For LiFePO4 Battery Bank Assembly

1. Only connect batteries with same voltage, same capacity, same model and same production batch.
2. For parallel setup, keep cable length and wire gauge identical for every single battery. Unbalanced cable resistance will lead to uneven current distribution.
3. Every battery must have its own built-in smart BMS. Never use one external BMS to govern multiple separate packs.
4. Leave enough cooling space between batteries, avoid tight stacking.

Most Common Field-Wiring Mistakes

Mistake 1: Mix old and new batteries inside one battery bank. Old batteries have higher internal resistance. Mixing new and used units will cause current imbalance, accelerate aging for the whole group.
Mistake 2: Manual series connection of finished battery packs on site. Even same-model packs have tiny voltage differences. Manual series without factory pre-matching may trigger BMS protection frequently.
Mistake3: Different-length parallel cables Shorter cables take more current. Some batteries will overwork while others barely output power.

Troubleshooting For Poor-performing Battery Bank

If your battery bank delivers low actual capacity after wiring:
1. Check whether all batteries are same-model and same batch.
2. Measure voltage of each pack under static status. Big voltage gap indicates unmatched units.
3. Inspect cable thickness and length, check for loose terminal connections.

FAQ

Q1: How many LiFePO4 packs can I connect in parallel? A: It depends on BMS design. Normally 4-8 units parallel is acceptable for most stationary storage packs. Do not exceed manufacturer’s suggested maximum parallel quantity.
Q2: Can I series our 12.8V finished packs to make 48V? A: We do not advise field-side series. Please select factory-assembled 48V LiFePO4 finished packs directly.
Q3: Do I need a separate balancer for parallel battery bank? A: If each pack is equipped with built-in smart BMS with cell balancing function, extra external balancer is unnecessary.
